I am pursuing a career in costume design through multimedia studies in the professional world and through a custom-designed honors curriculum at Drexel University. My major bridges garment design and construction with the production of media, allowing for an emphasis on storytelling. This has allowed for training in fashion, theater, film, visual arts, practical construction, art history, and so much more. Within Drexel, I am a Theater Production Scholar concentrating on costume design, but also receiving well-rounded training in lighting design, set design, and many other general aspects of production.
Outside of Drexel, I have had the privilege of working with many Philadelphia and Pennsylvania regional theaters on the costume and wardrobe teams, including People’s Light, Theater Horizon, The Arden, Plays and Players, and more. Mae completed a six month costume design internship with People’s Light that has resulted in continued wardrobe and stitching opportunities there. Mae is also pursuing costume design in non-theater contexts, namely through film, television, photography, and music. They have worked on various short films featuring musicians, professional wrestlers, drag artists, and actors of all varieties. Their design experience is interdisciplinary at its core, and they intend to pursue a career across many fields and mediums.
Most recently, I have been committed to the development of my senior Capstone work, a dance show entitled “Mortal: In Honor of Being Human”. I am the creative director and costume designer of this show, which aims to conjure what it means to be alive. The show is made of up four pieces representing stages of humanness, starting with the innocence of childhood and culminating in a joyful and transcendent vision of mortality. This show will be entirely non-profit, with all money earned going towards the Alzheimer’s Association, a cause that is close to my heart and central to the core thesis of the show. This work will also be the basis for film, photography, illustration, and other subsequent design and media.
